Night Out tonight

August 04, 2008

Are you ready for a night out? National Night Out is an annual event that gets big Twin Cities participation every year. Tonight is the night, and many blocks and neighborhoods have planned more or less elaborate events, including closing streets, setting up special events for kids, planning parties, and inviting police to come and talk about crime prevention. (For a great NNO story from a few years ago, see Friends in Peace.

The original plan for National Night Out called for people to turn on their porch lights and sit on their front porches, as a sign that neighbors, not criminals, owned the neighborhood. If you haven’t planned anything, that’s still a possibility. Or you could check the idea-packed Minneapolis National Night Out Web site for suggestions or to check on whether there’s a party somewhere nearby. Last year there were 1,117 registered observances in Minneapolis.

St. Paul’s Web site is less elaborate, and offers some ideas for observance even if you are starting late—“having root beer floats or lemonade, sharing a pot luck dinner, planning games or activities, and maybe even sidewalk chalk to draw pictures about what safety looks like on your block.”

A Google search turns up other celebrations in suburbs and around the state. The National Night Out has a locator that lists locations around the state.

BOOKS | "Skirmish": Bitterly funny poetry from Dobby Gibson

To be honest, I’ve never been an avid reader of poetry. I have nothing against poems, but for some reason my mind wants words on a page to present themselves as prose, and balks at taking them seriously when they’re organized in rhymed couplets, sonnet form, or—God forbid—free verse. When verse is set to music, I can generally handle it better. One reason I found Minneapolis poet Dobby Gibson’s new collection, Skirmish, so enjoyable is that his combination of mordant wit and bittersweet longing so recalls the lyrics of my favorite songwriter, Bob Dylan. Taking it to the streets -- or the meeting rooms

Two opportunities to speak out on budgets, local and state:

The Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bailout and the Welfare Rights Committee are organizing a campaign to demand a “People’s Bailout” of increased and extended aid to the poor, protection of public education funding, and no layoffs. The campaign kicks off with a protest at the state capitol on Tuesday, January 6 at noon, during the opening session of the state legislature. MORE »
