St. Paul Public Schools: Seeking community members for Board of Ed committee

November 17, 2008

The Capital Expenditures Advisory Committee (CEAC) reviews and comments on major capital expenditures planned by the district; members are appointed by the Board of Education to one-year terms. Applicants should have an interest in capital projects and the ability to work with a large advisory committee as a team member. The Board is looking for people who think strategically about district-wide needs and focus on what best meets the long-term needs of the students.

Committee membership is a mix of community members with connections to SPPS, experience and expertise in planning and/or building projects, and/or experience working on district committees.

CEAC meets Wednesday evenings up to twice a month from 7-9 pm and held its first meeting the week of November 10. This committee will be especially important over the next few years as the district faces the challenges of large-scale system change. There are still spaces open on this 21-member committee. When verse is set to music, I can generally handle it better. One reason I found Minneapolis poet Dobby Gibson’s new collection, Skirmish, so enjoyable is that his combination of mordant wit and bittersweet longing so recalls the lyrics of my favorite songwriter, Bob Dylan.
