Seriously

by Jeff Fecke • August 26, 2008 • I really don’t know what the media’s going to say about Hillary’s speech, but I hope this ends, once and for all, the myth that Hillary Clinton is secretly trying to subvert the Democratic party. She isn’t. She’s giving the best speech of the convention so far, and I don’t know how she could be more completely in support of Obama — though I’m sure someone will find some stray word that proves she isn’t.

A place for the perplexed: Part one

by Emilio DeGrazia • August 25, 2008 • My good neighbor, who has yet to read one of my books, keeps asking me over for a cup of tea. Wants to know me better, he says, though sometimes I don’t know about him. He’s a Welshman, a Quaker, an interior decorator with a long past on sailing ships, and a vegetarian who loves tubefuls of Icelandic fishpaste. I haven’t asked him if he knows where I live, because he’s sure to say in my house. Yes, I do live there, even when I don’t. I’m uppity enough to get snooty about where I live.

Walking for Hugh Thompson

by Larry Johnson • August 26, 2008 • As I write, we’re doing the final organizing for the National Veterans for Peace Convention, happening August 27-31 in the Twin Cities. This group of veterans of all wars is organized around the principle of, “We were there. We know how horrible war is, and we ask all governments everywhere to consider every possible means of peaceful negotiation before even thinking of committing its citizens to violent conflict”.

Hillary Clinton, still not evil

by Jeff Fecke, August 25, 2008 • Oh, that bitch Hillary Clinton, she sure burns my britches. Why, she’s actually going to have her name put in nomination at the DNC! That means clearly, she’s trying to destroy the party, unlike, say, Ted Kennedy, who did the same thing in 1980, or Jesse Jackson, who did the same thing in 1984 and 1988, or Jerry Brown, who got votes in 1992, or…well, anyhow, it’s evil when Hillary does it. And we all know her goal is to destroy the party from within, right?

Things People Say

Readers sound off on disco, the Unabomber, and Santa Christ

“If there was any deep division in the music scene in 1977, it wasn’t people scratching their heads at less than stellar releases from Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, or Steely Dan and Neil Young, it was the demise of live music as disco came to prominence. I could make the argument that Kansas, Nugent and other arena acts GAINED fans because people who hated disco REALLY hated disco (myself included).”

“John Jansen’s comments made me think of some of the bad things white people have done. Timothy McVeigh! Terry Nichols! The Unabomber! Not to mention almost all the serial killers in the U.S.! And all those Arab terrorists — they’re Caucasian! I just don’t think we can afford to have white people running this country. They are way too dangerous.”
-comment on “The Battle for Pine County”

“I really used to be amazed how these individuals could be so blatant about who they really are, and yet have their assemblies still pour money into their pockets so they can live like movie stars…and then you have those who are of the new faith: CASHIANS and followers of Santa Christ.”
