Free Speech Zone

The Free Speech Zone offers a space for contributions from readers, without editing by the TC Daily Planet. This is an open forum for articles that otherwise might not find a place for publication, including news articles, opinion columns, announcements and even a few press releases. Click here and follow directions to submit an article.

Transparency: We ask that you identify any connection or interest that you have in what you are writing about. For example, if you are employed by a political campaign and you are writing about a candidate, you should disclose that fact. If your article is a press release for an organization, please say so.

Tone and style: We hope your submissions will be constructive, accurate, and submitted in the spirit of contributing to civic dialogue. That is a guideline, but it is not a requirement for publication—the Free Speech Zone will not impose “politeness” standards. We encourage everyone to add a short bio at the end of your article.

The Free Speech Zone is a work-in-progress, which will be shaped by your contributions and participation.

The RNC and "free speech" hypocrisy

As a member of Veterans for Peace, the Minnesota ACLU and other “peace and justice” organizations, I will not march with the RNC Welcoming Committee, Students for a Democratic Society, or any other entity that intends to “shut down” the RNC.(1,2) Much has been said about the right of marchers to protest the policies and actions of the Republican Party. However, virtually nothing has been said about the right of that party or any other party to hold its convention without unlawful disruption. The silence on that issue seriously undermines the constitutional credibility and impartiality of the “peace and justice” community. MORE »

Safety and Wikipedia

Some say shared reference works like Wikipedia may have the power to transform civilization. Egalitarian ideals or an anarchistic vision may guide a work produced free, by anybody. But participants and lurkers are not equals. And anonymous and pseudonymous users and those with real names are also unequal. Risks to users must be weighed into the balance along with benefits, and one great risk is harm that can come not to its readers but to its editors. MORE »

Minnesota Peace Team (MnPT)

The Minnesota Peace Team (MnPT) is a group of people trained in nonviolent techniques who serve to protect life and human rights in potentially violent situations. We do this by reducing fear, bringing an attitude of openness and respect for all, increasing trust through relationships, and at times by being a presence or barrier in a physical conflict. MORE »

Things People Say

Readers sound off on disco, the Unabomber, and Santa Christ

“If there was any deep division in the music scene in 1977, it wasn’t people scratching their heads at less than stellar releases from Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, or Steely Dan and Neil Young, it was the demise of live music as disco came to prominence. I could make the argument that Kansas, Nugent and other arena acts GAINED fans because people who hated disco REALLY hated disco (myself included).”
-comment on “Sucking in ’77”

“John Jansen’s comments made me think of some of the bad things white people have done. Timothy McVeigh! Terry Nichols! The Unabomber! Not to mention almost all the serial killers in the U.S.! And all those Arab terrorists — they’re Caucasian! I just don’t think we can afford to have white people running this country. They are way too dangerous.”
-comment on “The Battle for Pine County”

“I really used to be amazed how these individuals could be so blatant about who they really are, and yet have their assemblies still pour money into their pockets so they can live like movie stars…and then you have those who are of the new faith: CASHIANS and followers of Santa Christ.”
